What Is TMJ?

TMJ is a disorder of the temporomandibular joint – a hinge that connects the jaw to the temporal bones of the skull. The joint supports your jaw movement up, down, and side to side, letting you chew, talk, and yawn.

People at their teen years start experiencing the symptoms of TMJ as their jaw develop at a different pace than their skull. The misalignment of the jawbone and the joint can also happen due to the oral issues of people – crooked teeth, dental trauma, and more.

The following are the symptoms of the disorder:

    Treatment

Based on the diagnosis and the symptoms, our dentists may provide you with medications, surgical procedures, or therapies, or a combination of these treatment options. When it comes to medications, we give muscle relaxants and pain relievers to contain pain and muscle spasms.

Our non-drug therapies include physical therapy and mouthguards. The physical therapy is a combination of jaw muscle exercises, using ultrasound, ice, and moist heat. We will also use mouth guards or oral splints to place them over the teeth of the patients to address the symptoms.

If the non-surgical procedures don’t help, we will provide you with some of the following invasive procedures:

Arthrocentesis – the procedure of collecting synovial fluid from the joint to remove debris

Modified condylotomy can be helpful if you experience locking. The surgical procedure is performed on the mandible – not in the joint – to benefit TMJ indirectly.

If the disorder and pain are due to the structural problems of the joint, our dentists will complete an open-joint surgery. Our oral and maxillofacial surgeons complete the TMJ surgery that involves the repairing or replacing of the joint.

    Diagnosis

Our dental practitioners will listen to your symptoms and examine the range of motion of your jaw. If they find an issue, they will take x-rays and MRI scans to identify the issues associated with your joint disk as well as the surrounding soft tissue.

We also use TMJ arthroscopy to diagnose the disorder. As part of TMJ arthroscopy, we will insert a thin tube into the space around your jaw joint and place a small camera to examine the area. The procedure can help us to identify issues such as the damage to the joint surface and torn cartilage. It is also used for performing arthroscopic surgery to correct TMJ disorders.
